Blown Tire Relegates J.J. Yeley and the No. 36 Drive Sober. Arrive Alive DE Chevrolet to a 34th-place Finish at Dover
DOVER, Del. (October 1, 2012) – The Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) team started the AAA 400 from the 40th position with J.J. Yeley behind the wheel. On lap 69, the tire blew on the No. 36 Drive Sober. Arrive Alive DE Chevrolet which resulted in damage to the right, front fender. The team worked to get the car to handle with the damage and finished in 34th place.
Yeley took the green flag of the AAA 400 from the 40th position and quickly drove the No. 36 Drive Sober. Arrive Alive DE Chevrolet to the 33rd position by lap six. The Phoenix, Ariz., native radioed that the car was tight into and off the corner. By lap 14, he told the crew that the tight condition was getting worse. On lap 33, the No. 36 Chevrolet fell a lap down to the leader.
By lap 59, Yeley drove the Drive Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet to the 29th position. He told the crew that the tight condition was still getting worse. Crew Chief Tommy Baldwin told his driver that the team would make a wedge and air pressure adjustment on the next pit stop.
Ten laps later, the right, front tire blew on the No. 36 Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet. The blown tire tore up the right, front fender and left debris on the track. NASCAR Officials called a caution on lap 70. Yeley drove down pit road, and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety team changed two right-side tires and worked on the damage. Yeley drove back out on the track and then pit for left-side tires and a wedge and air pressure adjustment. Later, Goodyear Officials told the team something cut the tire causing it to blow. He restarted in the 36th position, three laps down, on lap 77.
The damage increased the tight condition on the No. 36 Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet. Baldwin called Yeley down pit road on lap 142 for a four-tire, green flag pit stop and trackbar adjustment. The Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet returned to the track in the 36th position, five laps down.
NASCAR Officials called a caution for debris on lap 180. Yeley told the crew that the earlier wedge adjustment helped the tight condition more than the trackbar adjustment. The TBR crew changed four tires and made another wedge adjustment. On lap 185, the No. 36 Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet restarted in the 36th position, six laps down. Yeley held onto the 36th position during the next run and still struggled with a tight condition.
On lap 247, NASCAR Officials called another debris caution, and the team made a four-tire pit stop and wedge adjustment. The No. 36 Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet restarted 35th, nine laps down. Another debris caution on lap 310 allowed the team to make another pit stop. Before pitting, Yeley told the crew that the car was better for the first 10 laps of the run and then began to tighten up. Baldwin called for a four tire pit stop and air pressure adjustment.
The field restarted on lap 316 with Yeley in the 35th position, 10 laps down. Two laps later, he told the crew that the Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet was tighter in the entry of the corner than the last run. Three laps later, Matt Kenseth hit the inside wall of turn four and brought out the fifth and final caution of the day. The No. 36 Driver Sober. Arrive Alive Chevrolet restarted in the 34th position, 11 laps down, on lap 322. Yeley held onto the position for the final 88 laps and finished the AAA 400 in 34th place.
The No. 36 team held onto the 35th position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Owner Points. The team now trails the No. 32 by 23 points and is ahead of the No. 21 by 129 points.
“It was an unfortunate day,” explained Yeley. “We had a tire blow early on, and it was hard to get a handle on the car with the damage. We are thankful to the Delaware Office of Highway Safety for coming on board and supporting us this weekend. I had a lot of fun helping them promote safe driving.”
TBR will head to Talladega Superspeedway next weekend. David Reutimann will pilot the No. 10 CVP@tmone.com Chevrolet, while Dave Blaney drives the No. 36 Golden Corral Chevrolet.
