David Reutimann and Tommy Baldwin Racing Struggle with Handling at Charlotte Motor Speedway
The No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet finished 30th
CONCORD, N.C. (October 15, 2012) – David Reutimann started 34th in the No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet. The Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) team worked on an ill-handling racecar and finished 30th in the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Reutimann took the green flag of the Bank of America 500 from the 34th position. He fell to the 36th position when the No. 17 spun on lap 12 and brought out the caution. Reutimann told Crew Chief Tommy Baldwin that the No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet was good on entry but really free early in the run. Baldwin called for a four-tire pit stop and a rubber adjustment.
As the field took the green flag on the lap-16 restart, cars made contact and brought out the yellow flag. When the field restarted on lap 22, Reutimann held the 30th position. He drove into the 26th spot before falling back to 29th when the No. 27 spun in turn four and brought out the caution on lap 37.
The Zephyrhills, Fla., native radioed that the No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet was losing the nose in the center of the corner and loose off the corner. He drove down pit road for a two-tire pit stop. The field restarted on lap 42 with the TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet in the 23rd spot. By lap 63, Reutimann fell back to the 29th position and told the crew that the Chevrolet was still tight in the center of the corner. He continued saying that the car was loose into the corner, really tight in the center and loose out of the corner.
As green flag pit stops began, he moved into the 23rd position by lap 81. On lap 82, Baldwin called the No. 10 Chevrolet down pit road for a four-tire pit stop and air pressure adjustment. The TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet returned to the track in the 29th position, two laps down. Fifteen laps later, Reutimann radioed that the car was about to wreck getting into the corner and the back of the car was slipping as he turned.
On lap 129, Baldwin called Reutimann back down pit road for a four-tire, green-flag pit stop and chassis adjustment. The No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet returned to the track in the 31st position, two laps down. Reutimann radioed that the car was good for three laps and then went right back to the same handling issues as before. By lap 143, he told the crew he was wrecking loose.
NASCAR Officials called a caution for debris on lap 168 and gave the team an opportunity to make big changes to the racecar. Baldwin called for a four-tire pit stop and a rubber and air pressure adjustment. The No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet restarted in the 27th position, two laps down, on lap 173.
He worked into the 26th position by lap 192 and told the crew that the car was now just loose on the exit of the corner and tight in the center. He drove into the 25th position by lap 209 but fell a third lap down on lap 211. By lap 223, Baldwin called Reutimann down pit road for a four-tire pit stop. He returned to the track in the 26th position, four laps down.
On lap 224, NASCAR Officials waved the yellow flag for debris on the frontstretch. With some of the leaders staying on the track, Baldwin chose to top-off the fuel on the No. 10 Chevrolet. The No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet restarted in the 26th position, three laps down, on lap 228. He fell to the 27th spot on lap 230 and told the crew that the car was better off the corner but still struggled with a tight condition in the center of the corner.
By lap 272, Baldwin called the No. 10 Chevrolet back down pit road for a four-tire pit stop and trackbar adjustment. Reutimann returned to the track in the 27th position, five laps down. The adjustment did not help the tight condition in the center, so the team prepared for a two-tire pit stop for their final stop of the night.
As Reutimann maneuvered from the top line to make his final green-flag pit stop on lap 320, cars blocked his entrance, and he had to drive around another lap. When he got to pit road, he had run out of fuel and was speeding while entering. The team changed right-side tires during the stop. On lap 324, he drove the No. 10 TBR/TMone.com Chevrolet down pit road for a pass-through penalty. He returned to the track in the 30th position, seven laps down, and held the position when the checkered flag flew on lap 334.
“It was a disappointing night for our team,” Reutimann said. “We struggled with the handling and the changes didn’t seem to help. We fixed the loose in and loose off conditions but couldn’t get rid of the tightness in the center of the corner. I’m looking forward to getting back into the No. 10 Chevrolet at Martinsville Speedway. We have done better at short tracks this year, so I am eager to have a strong finish in my final short track start with TBR this season.”
